Your puppy’s paws are one of the most sensitive parts of their bodies since these are skin layers that are exposed to the environment. So during cold weather conditions, it’s important to protect your puppy’s paws from snow and grit burn from salt to prevent any injuries.
Here are some of the basic things you need to keep your puppy’s paw safe during the winter season.
Boots
Whether you’re a fan of boots or not, using them during the cold season is the best way to protect their paws. It protects your puppy from the cold pavement and from grit burn.
Dog boots have rubber soles to provide grip and prevent your puppy from slipping on the wet ground. Some also have added padding to keep their paws warm and protect them from the cold. Water-repellant materials is another feature to consider when choosing winter boots.
Paw Balms
Some dogs don’t like winter boots, so if your dog is one of them, your next best option to protect your puppy’s paws is to use paw balms. Petroleum jelly-based balms provide an added layer of protection for their paws. Rub it on their paws before heading out to prevent snow from getting in between their toes. It also has a moisturising effect that prevents their paws from drying out.
Towels
After heading out, be sure to wipe their paws with a towel, especially if they didn’t wear any boots. Be sure to wipe their body as well to prevent snow and salt from damaging their skin. Keep the towel handy during your walk outside in case any snow sticks to their bodies.
